Description:
Klahhane Ridge is located to the south of Port Angeles near Hurricane Ridge. This ridge can be accessed by different hiking trails that offer perfect views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The word “Klahhane” is a Chinook word, which means "outdoors."
To be more concrete, the Klahhane Ridge is accessible by four different ways: from the north – the heather Park Trail and the Lake Angeles Trail, from the south – the Switchback Trail and from the west via the Sunrise Ridge Trail.
The Switchback Trail is considered to be the shortest but the steepest among these four ways. Be prepared that the trail ascends 1500 feet in 1.5 miles.
Hikers recommend taking an early start if you do not want to be stuck in the midday heat. This steep trail provides gorgeous views of the Vancouver Island’s summits and the peaks of the Olympic Mountains.
In about 0.6 miles, you come to a junction with the Mount Angles Trail. Here you are to turn left and follow the trail. Sometimes hikers may encounter bears. Sunrise Ridge Trail leads you through beautiful and full of summer flowers alpine meadows. From this trail hikers will surely see the Klahhane Ridge.
The second junction on your way will be at Victor Pass. From here hikers should take the right trail if they want to reach the Klahhane Ridge, or the left trail if they want to go to heather Park. Keep in mind that the trail that leads to the park is usually covered with snow till the middle of summer.
The views from the Klahhan Ridge are spectacular, including Vancouver Island, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Elk Mountain and the Grand Ridge, beautiful Cox Valley and Mount Cameron.
