Description:
The Skokomish River is the largest river flowing into Hood Canal. There are two forks of the river: North Fork and Sooth Fork. Near the towns of Union and Skokomish the river creates a large estuary, which is called Skokomish Flats.
Skokomish River is very popular among anglers. Here you can catch Winter Steelhead, Chinook, Coho, Chum, Pink Salmon, Cutthroat Resident and Sea-Run.
Every year, Skokomish River is stocked with about 25,000 – 30,000 steelhead trout. As for the salmon fishing, the prime time for that is August and September, as Chinook runs here. Later coho and chum salmon can be caught here.
Trolling and mooching along the drop off of the flats are the most common techniques for catching blackmouth, coho and summer Chinook. It is also recommended to fish with a bobber and anchovy. Coastal cutthroat that often comes here can be caught by flyfishing or by trolling small lures.
Anglers on the Skokomish River had an additional week to fish for Chinook this year. The season was open Aug. 1 through Sept. 1. The Skokomish also was open daily for coho beginning Sept. 15. Salmon fishing is allowed from the Highway 106 upstream to the Highway 101 Bridge with some restrictions, such as daily limit is 2 fish, Chum and Chinook should be released, and minimal size of the fish is 12''.
