General Information:
Grand Coulee Dam is considered one of the largest dams in the world and the largest one in the Columbia River basin. To be concrete, the dam is 550 feet in height, and 5,223 feet in length – it’s almost one mile long!
The construction of the dam started in 1933 and finished in 1975. It is the largest concrete construction that has ever been built. There is an interesting fact about the amount of concrete in Grand Coulee Dam: there is enough concrete to build a 60-foot wide highway (four inches thick) from New York to Los Angeles.
The Grand Coulee Dam is located in the Columbia River Gorge, about 90 miles west of Spokane, about 100 miles south of Canada border, and about 230 miles east of Seattle.
It has four power plants, two of them are original. The dam has started producing power in 1941. Nowadays the total generating capacity of the dam is 6,809 megawatts. This means that the dam has the power to supply continuously two big cities the size of Seattle.
Visits to the dam are very interesting, because you may explore the history, take part in the D3 Geocache Challenge, view the Laser Light Show, and come inside the Visitor Center to experience the hands-on exhibits.
It should be mentioned that the visitor center is open daily form 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
