Description:
Lime Kiln Point is a very nice 36-acre park which is located in the western part of San Juan Island. This island is very popular among tourists, because it is considered to be one of the best places in the world for whale-watching. The most popular whales that choose these waters for summer are Orca whales. Except orcas, tourist may enjoy minke whales, seals, sea lions, porpoises and other marine mammals. The best time to come here for whale-watching is the middle of summer, to be concrete June and July.
The lighthouse, which is located on the territory of the park, is a center for ongoing orca research, but it is open for tourists and tours during summer. It was built in 1919 and still serves as a navigational beacon for ships in the Haro Strait. A very nice path that runs along the rocky shoreline and offers great view takes hikers from the Karen Munro Outlook and brings them to the Lighthouse.
The views of the park and from the park are indescribable…they are perfect even if the whales cannot be seen. The Olympic Mountains that rise over the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Vancouver Island, Haro Strait…
But of course, whale-watching is the most popular activity here. An interpretive center that is situated in the park features great hands-on exhibits about the life of orcas in these waters. Remember that the center is open during summer only.
Additional Information:
Boats for whale-watching and kayak trips are available on San Juan Island.
This place is popular among divers and considered to be a great place for this kind of sport, but diving is dangerous in this region due to strong currents.
200 acres of county land that surround Lime Kiln State Park are open to public.
